about

Freddie J Watts’ ‘Sweet Lady’ let’s you know how good longing can feel, in his ode to the unknown of unrequited love the Brighton based musician showcases the maturity and prowess of his songwriting in his new single

Freddie J Watts is a dark horse within the Brighton music scene and when it comes to writing great songs, this definitely isn’t his first rodeo. Having toured and performed with the likes of Wax Machine and (more recently) Rokurokubi, he is now firmly set on conjuring something distinctly his own – marrying British Psychedelia, American Folk and elements of Alternative/Indie.

Like drinking in the last hours of a balmy summer's night, Freddie’s dark rich resonant vocals carries you across a finely crafted arrangement, for a ride of romantic reverie, bliss and wonder. Boasting a rich lineup of local talent – including members of the hotly tipped New Eves and Daisy Rickman – this track pulls together some of Brighton finest musicians. Awash with nostalgia and sentimentality and yet far from being contrived and twee, ‘Sweet Lady’ is a song of romance that feels both familiar and surprisingly fresh. “Bright as the full moon/ But as distant as the setting sun” hints at Freddie’s symbolic lyricism and the feeling of push and pull that gives the track an ever rising sense of tension and release, like waves breaking on soft moonlit shores, the song holds a profound reflective quality.

Recorded and mixed by Wax Machine’s very own Lau Ro, the single’s sound echoes a love affair with the golden age of American record making and doesn’t fall short in its delivery.
